They flew away
One by one.
Eyes were vigilant
Quavering was their steps
Hearts were giving in
But the mind fought back
It was time.
The sun peeped above the mountain, slowly it rose
Scared to see the first flight
As some will accompany her and some won’t
The elder paved the path.
First was he born
First to leave
First to detangle the bonds once weaved
Daring he was; as merciless was nature
The wind pounced
The earth pulled
The wings endured
The elder lived yet many to conquer
One by one the soldiers marched on
Some took off right away
Some needed a push
They celebrated their flight while one laid low.
A four-letter word is fear.
Takes one breath to utter, but an eternity to bear.
Fear ruled the little one, trembled as a leaf
The elders nudged it forward
The peers despised its pleas
Nature it is, they said.
Is it the height?
The possible fall?
Or the dread of leaving the birth canal?
Passing every minute crushed the soul a little
The hopeful pushes
The neglecting looks
Prolonged the misery, not the time.
As the eyes got translucent, anger replaced fear.
Jumped the little one with its battle gear.
The fresh scent of liberty wiped its tears.
The urge to look back increased as it rose higher
But the thought of loss slowed down the flyer.
Once home is now an empty nest with feathers
Belonged to the guests who were once the owners
